SHE DID WHAT SHE COULD

If you can, read Mark 14:1-9

Mark 14:8 - "She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying."

We've heard ministers say it. We've heard doctors say it. We've heard parents and children say it. We've heard our friends and family members say it. If fact we've said it ourselves. "I DID WHAT I COULD."

There are times when what we can do to help, comfort, or "fix" a situation is so limited.  We make our best effort, but we have doubts that what we did was effective or helpful. We sigh, saying, "I did what I could".

In the eyes of the Lord Jesus doing what you can is acceptable.  Shortly before the death of Jesus Mary of Bethany anointed Jesus' body.  Mary, according to Luke 10:39, "sat at Jesus' feet and heard his word." She understood that Jesus was going to die. In anticipation of that she took very expensive perfume and anointed Jesus with it.

Mary was greatly criticized by the disciples (She was especially criticized by Judas who was a thief.) for her lavish display of devotion. Jesus defended Mary, explained what she had done, and said that wherever the Gospel was preached she would be remembered (Mark 14:9).  The most significant statement he made was "She has done what she could." That was not a criticism, but a compliment.

This statement by Jesus leads me to be believe that He is satisfied when we do what we can. He is able in the power of His Holy Spirit to take our little efforts and use them for his glory. He wants us simply to do what we can and let Him do the rest (Zechariah 4:6).

Have you sincerely done what you could for the Lord Jesus? If so, He is pleased!
